Liver – Transplantworld

The Liver is an important organ in the body which is responsible for functions vital to life. It can be damaged severely in certain conditions like Liver Cirrhosis leading to end stage liver disease which requires Liver Transplant.

In such situations, liver transplant is the only treatment which can improve survival and save life. In the end stage of liver cirrhosis the patient’s average life span can be less than 6 months but with timely liver transplant most of the patients can live for more than five years.

Liver transplant can improve life survival to 90-95% for 1 year and about 85% for 5 years.

Treatment options for Liver Failure/ Liver Cirrhosis

Living Donor Liver Transplant:

In the initial stages Liver Failure and Liver Cirrhosis there are treatments which help stabilise the illness

  • Paracentesis: Tapping of ascites ( Excess fluid removed from the belly to relieve the pressure)
  • Endoscopic Banding of Varices: Unlike the kidney there are no effective treatments which can effectively maintain a stable health for a long time, and as the liver cirrhosis progresses – Liver Transplant becomes an increasing need to prevent complications and to have better survival.

Types of Liver Transplant
